House District 148 (map)

Candidate: Rep. Jessica Farrarr
Home City: Houston, TX
Counties: Harris (part)
Population: 140,117

Rep. Jessica Farrarr: On top of being a senior member of the Democratic leadership in Texas, Representative Jessica Farrar is the Women’s Health Caucus in the House and the Texas Women’s Health Foundation, a non-profit organization working to de-politicize women’s health issues. In short, there is no more ardent an advocate for the health, safety and financial security of women and children in the Texas Legislature than Jessica Farrar.

Her district, in central Houston, is 60% Democratic so a future threat would occur
in the primary election. Even though her Democratic leadership duties require her to
monitor the statewide political landscape, she is constantly working at home to meet
her constituents’ needs and communicate her successes in the Legislature.

She was elected to the Texas House in 1994 at age 27 and is now the longest serving
Latina from Houston. The breadth and depth of Chairwoman Farrar’s policy experience, in combination with her passion and commitment to progressive causes,
makes her priceless in the fight to protect Texas families and take back our state.

Whether it is blocking attempts to siphon money from public schools for voucher schemes, stopping more cuts to critical social services or deflecting the Republican’s incessant attacks on a woman’s right to choose – Rep. Farrar is on the House floor rallying the troops, fighting back and often stymieing their efforts to push Texas backwards.

As Annie’s List elects more women to the Legislature and fights to return us to a
sustainable Democratic majority, we need Chairwoman Jessica Farrar there to mentor
them and lead the charge.
