Andrea Jackson Barefield stepped away from her hometown of Waco to start and run the Debbie Allen Dance Institute in Houston.  There, she was fueled by the transformation she witnessed when young, under-served students got to train and perform with world-renowned artists.  Returning to Waco, she saw too many people being left behind. Still called by the power of transformation, she is running for Waco City Council, District 1 to be an advocate for equitable access in a district that has been historically disenfranchised from the process.

Her focus in office is to make sure her district benefits from the economic growth that Waco is experiencing. Andrea has forged strong relationships within Waco and McLennan County that will enable her to hit the ground running.  “My impact will be when the people of District 1 find their own voice to have access and information that will bring their truth to power,” Andrea shared. “I hope that our new synergy will cause the fire and pride of the Eastside
to return.”

Happily married to husband Elijah for 15 years, mother of two sons, Drew and Jaxon, plus third “kid” pit/Weimaraner dog, Zeus, this former barrel racer and baking enthusiast is also an amazing community leader. Andrea is VP of the NAACP in Waco, serves on the Waco Civic Theatre, WISD Foundation and Waco Community Visioning Boards.

She’s an active member of the Legislative Committee of the Texas Downtown Association and the City of Waco Planning and Zoning Commission.

Andrea has public service in her genes. Her mother, the late, beloved Dr. Mae Jackson, led Waco as mayor, the first African American to do so.

“My mother always taught me to climb to your highest heights and remember to bring someone with you to teach them the way. In this political climate, when the voice and rights of women, especially women of color, are being challenged daily, organizations like Annie’s List are no longer a luxury, but a necessity.  I have seen how impactful the organization has been to female candidates, including my own mother, in how we run for and win elections. As I enter this season of my life and continue to make my mark on my community, being endorsed by Annie’s List means we are graced with another opportunity to impact change and elevate new generations into political leadership.”
