Meander into a Burleson area church with a gospel choir on a Sunday, and you may hear a lovely mezzo-soprano warbling. That same person plans to lift her voice on behalf of her community in the Texas Senate. Beverly Powell, a life-long community leader, education reformer and gospel singer  has high aspirations for her district.

Beverly grew up on a 300-acre farm in Burleson, where her community roots and dedication run deep. She is especially committed to education, and serves students and the community as a Trustee on the Texas Wesleyan Board of Trustees. But perhaps her most treasured role is as a founder and leader of the Burleson Opportunity Fund, which has raised and granted $1.4 million in college scholarships to 1,200 students in ten years. The program, a partnership between the school district, city of Burleson and community leaders, is a win all around. “We’ve provided first year scholarships to every student who has asked and second year scholarships for those who qualify based on merit,” Beverly shared. “The city provides some of the economic development resources to develop citizens so we have an educated workforce. One of our students is now the head of nursing at one of the leading hospitals in Fort Worth!” she enthused like a proud parent.

It’s leadership and care for her community that makes Beverly someone you want in the Texas Senate. Throughout her campaign, she has spent nearly every day out in her community, listening to the needs of every neighborhood, which are as diverse as her district. “The biggest A-ha moment I have had is that when you look at our state government now, you see this divisive, mean-spirited action going on everywhere that discriminates against our people in a way you can’t understand,” she reflected. “When you get out into the community you understand we are all the same, we have the same wants and wishes for our families. We may be socio-economically diverse, but we are very much the same.”

Beverly grew up in a gold star family who lost a son in the Korean War when she was just a child. “All this craziness that is going on in Korea and with Trump, it’s kept those memories alive like you never knew. When I found my mom’s letters a few years ago after she passed away, I had a wave of understanding and grief about parts of their personalities that stemmed from his death.”

A genealogy enthusiast, Beverly is particularly fond of those closest to her on the family tree: her husband, children and seven grandkids. As a Texas Senator, Beverly’s door will always be open as she works to create a better, fairer Texas. Her top agenda items are public school reform and local control over economic development.  “A lot of our economic incentives are driven locally and job creation is really important….I hear that more than anything else,” Beverly said. “We are in a high growth area, one of the fastest growing cities in Texas and the nation. Managing growth in healthy ways means a strong focus on public transportation and the expansion of our highway system to accommodate traffic and sustainable development that provides a high quality lifestyle for our families.”

We look forward to watching as Beverly hits some high notes for Texas citizens in the next legislative session.
