Marisa B. Perez has proudly served South Texas, from Bexar to Hidalgo County on the Texas State Board of Education since 2012. Marisa was elected to her office in November 2012 and became the youngest Hispanic to hold a State Board of Education seat nationwide.

Marisa was born and raised in San Antonio, a proud product of San Antonio Independent School District. She attended Woodlawn Elementary, Horace Mann Middle School and Edison High School’s Health Professions Magnet School.  At 3 years old she became a student of Ballet Folkflorico and Flamenco, joining the Guadalupe Dance Company where she remains active for the past 26 years. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin where she received her B.A. in sociology with in a minor in psychology.

Marisa’s passion for advocacy and love for children guided her towards starting her career with Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) where she worked as a caseworker for many years.  Her time at CPS allowed her to obtain a unique perspective of the educational system and the need for greater advocacy.

Marisa was elected to the State Board of Education in 2012, defeating an incumbent in what is considered one of the biggest upset in recent years.

During her first year in office Marisa has become one of the leading voices on the Texas State Board of Education for proper public education, equitable textbook review processes, local control of teachers and school districts and strengthening the relationship between policymakers and school officials.

Marisa believes our children and communities deserve access to the best education possible.  She firmly believes that teachers need access to more tools and professional development in order to continue educating our young scholars.  Marisa continues to collaborate with all of her 89 school district educators and leadership in order to create policy reflective of the needs and issues facing actual educators.    She believes that improving Texas education can create jobs, strengthen communities and keep Texas on top. She continues to work on improving public schools by championing local control for districts, fighting for proper balanced textbooks and curriculum, and bringing more resources to local districts.
