(AUSTIN, TX)- Annie’s List, the statewide political organization that works to elect progressive Democratic women to office in Texas, enthusiastically announces the endorsements of three Houston area candidates for the Texas House and for Harris County Judge:

  • Gina Calanni for Texas House District 132
  • Lina Hidalgo for Harris County Judge
  • Allison Lami Sawyer for Texas House District 134

“We are thrilled to support the campaigns of these first-time candidates who represent our shared vision for a more inclusive, equitable Texas” said Royce Brooks, Annie’s List Executive Director. “Though they are new to electoral politics, each of these women is already an extraordinary leader in her professional life, in her family, and in her community. They bring real-world perspectives to the offices they seek, and that experience and good judgment will inform their approach to governing.”

Gina Calanni

Annie’s List endorses Gina Calanni in her race for House District 132, which covers west Harris County from Cypress to Katy. A multi-published author, single mother of three sons, and community organizer and fundraiser, Calanni studied political science in college.  She decided to run after researching the incumbent’s legislative record and realizing he was failing to address some of their community’s most pressing needs. In the House, Calanni will make public education funding and better salaries for teachers her top priority. In a region hit hard by successive flooding events, she is committed to smart standards for development in areas that are prone to flooding. She will also fight to eradicate sex trafficking in Texas. Metro Houston is one of the nation’s leading hubs for labor and sex trafficking. Calanni wants to institute laws that will stop traffickers and protect the health and well-being of trafficking survivors.

Lina Hidalgo

Annie’s List endorses Lina Hidalgo for Harris County Judge. Hidalgo is no stranger to the challenges and issues many Houston-area immigrants face. She arrived in Harris County as an immigrant after her parents fled Colombia, South America during that country’s drug war. Houston welcomed Hidalgo and her family with open arms. Now Hidalgo, a Stanford graduate with a history of public service and community advocacy, wants to pay it forward. She envisions a Harris County whose fiscal priorities reflect its social values. As Harris County Judge, she will work to ensure the region’s health care, education, flood control, criminal justice and infrastructure systems are meeting the needs of every resident.

Allison Lami Sawyer

Annie’s List endorses Allison Lami Sawyer in her race for Texas House District 134, located almost entirely within Houston’s inner loop. Sawyer has a master’s degree in physics and is the co-founder and CEO of high tech oil and gas safety firm Rebellion Photonics. Allison is seeking the seat to fight legislation like the Blue Tarp bill, which makes it harder to get flood and hurricane damage covered by insurance companies; SB4, the racial profiling “show me your papers” bill; and deep budget cuts to CPS and public schools. Sawyer understands the need to work with all her fellow legislators to create funding, policies and laws that help all citizens thrive.

Annie’s List is supporting these candidates through a combination of expert training and political advice, digital advertising, and financial contributions. “We are so excited about these candidates,” said Annie’s List Political Director Monica Gomez. “The compassion, commitment and new thinking these women will bring to office will really shift governing from politics as usual, to policies that work for all Texans.”

Annie’s List works to achieve equity for women by changing the face of leadership in Texas. We recruit, train, support and elect progressive, pro-choice women who are dedicated to advancing the self-determination, health, safety and financial security of Texas women and their families. Since our founding in 2003, Annie’s List has trained thousands of women to run for office and won more than 100 races up and down the ballot and across the state.

This year, Annie’s List is excited to support the ground-breaking campaigns of three exceptional pro-choice Democratic women candidates for statewide office and many more who are running for state legislative and local offices. We are also proud to have trained and/or supported two-thirds of eighty Democratic women running in 2018 for the Texas state legislature.
