Close Elections like HD-105 Put TX GOP on Watch

AUSTIN, TX – Today, upon the announcement of the final recount results in HD-105, Annie’s List released the following statement from Executive Director Patsy Woods Martin:

“We remain incredibly proud of Terry Meza, who ran a hard-fought campaign to provide mainstream leadership for one of the most diverse districts in the state. Unfortunately, her campaign fell 64 votes shy of a new future for working families in HD-105.”

Woods Martin continued, “General election results across the state, including these, reflect the growing power of voters — from all backgrounds — who are fed up with swelling classrooms, and want leaders who will ensure every Texan is fairly rewarded for their contributions to the Texas economy.”

Woods Martin concluded, “Half the voters in the district made it clear that they feel Rodney Anderson’s radical votes do not represent their values. We join them and Texas voters across the state in watching closely to see how GOP Members will vote in the coming Session: will they focus on classrooms, or bathrooms; will they look away, or keep foster kids safe; will they continue to deny women what they have earned, or recognize our contributions to the workforce? Simply put: we’re watching.”

Annie’s List is the largest progressive PAC in the state. Annie’s List is dedicated to changing the face of power in Texas by recruiting, training, supporting and electing progressive women to elected offices. Since its founding in 2003, Annie’s List has contributed over $4.5 million, trained thousands of women and helped elect and re-elect 35 progressive women to office.

Although Texas is one of America’s largest and most diverse states, and even though men comprise 49% of the population, they hold 80% of the lawmaking power in the Legislature (144 of 181 seats).
