Statement on Empower Texans’ Media Credentials

In response to Empower Texans–a political organization that financially supports and advocates for far-right policies–having received media credentials from the Texas State Senate, Annie’s List will not be seeking the same. We believe media access is for media organizations. As a right-wing advocacy group, Empower Texans’ press privileges should be revoked.

As a PAC, we at Annie’s List  can and do take the opportunity to highlight our own work, the work of our elected champions, and the issues that we stand for through written commentary and editorials. But that written commentary does not make us a media organization. We are a political organization working to build a better, fairer Texas by recruiting, training and electing progressive women. Like every Texan, we rely on the integrity and clear-eyed reporting of the Texas press corps.

Texas is full of some of the nation’s sharpest, most forward-thinking media minds. We look to these men and women to hold our elected officials accountable, create factual public records, and provide honest commentary on the state of politics in Texas. Their work is a necessary component of an effective democracy. Diluting the impact of the press pool would be a disservice to every Texan.
