Thank You Legislative Champions
June 3, 2017
“Despite the political challenges, we had a productive session.” That’s how Annie’s List Champion Rep. Celia Israel summed up this legislative session. And we agree – thank you to our Annie’s List Legislative Champions for all their hard work this session.
In total, Champions filed more than 1,200 bills in the House and the Senate. Click here to see highlights of some of the bills they filed this session. To date, 81 of those bills have passed both chambers and are on the way to Governor Abbott’s desk and we’re encouraged that he has already signed a few that will impact the lives of all Texas women, children and families:
- Working to fix the state’s rape kit backlog, Rep. Victoria Neave filed HB 4102 which establishes a private grant program to pay for testing of the backlog of untested rape kits.
- Rep. Ina Minjarez secured additional resources for foster care families in efforts to reform the state’s CPS system in an amendment filed to HB 4.
- Senator Sylvia Garcia and Rep. Senfronia Thompson carried bills in each chamber requiring Commercial Drivers License applicants to take courses on human trafficking.
- Rep. Ana Hernandez’s HB 238 passed a bill to protect the rights of pregnant inmates.
Governor Abbott has until June 18th to sign or veto all remaining passed legislation. We look forward to sharing more details about all of the bills passed by our Champions after this deadline.
